Lexus to preview next-gen GS with LF-Gh concept at New York

Although Lexus as brand has been making impressive inroads into the luxury car segment, most of its sales remain concentrated on the RX SUV. German players continue to dominate the sedan market, but the next generation Lexus GS may give us all something to think about.

At the upcoming New York International Auto Show, Lexus will be showcasing the LF-Gh hybrid concept, which is widely believed to a preview for the next-generation Lexus GS. For those not intimately familiar with Lexus’ nomenclature, the GS is the brand’s entry to the E-Class-5-Series-A6 market, and the current model is, well, pretty forgettable.

Good thing then, that Lexus got started with a “clean sheet of paper” this time round. Design cues that you see here will form the basis for the design language and philosophy to be used in the next generation of Lexus cars. The landmark design feature of this car is most certainly its highly aggressive-looking ‘spindle’ grille.

According to Lexus, ‘the concept also explores how traditional features such as door mirrors and handles can be minimised to enhance overall sleekness and improve aerodynamics’. Minimized they indeed have. Check out the pictures. See any side mirrors? In their place are what appears to be cameras mounted to assume their role of providing rear-ward vision.

Powertrain details have not been released, the only thing we know is that the show car runs on a hybrid powertrain, a fact ‘advertised’ by the use of blue badges at the front grille and bootlid.

We’ll say this, more than worthy a replacement model for the GS.
