Production version of Lexus NX to make Beijing debut

Lexus has released the first details of its all-new, sharply styled luxury compact crossover ahead of its unveiling at the 2014 Beijing International Auto Show.

Described as a mid-sized SUV by the company, the NX is Lexus’ first foray downwards from the RX in SUV market. It will go head against the likes of the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and perhaps the Range Rover Evoque.

Styling of the new model was previewed in concept form in the two LF-NX concepts showcased in last year’s Frankfurt and Tokyo motor shows. Beijing will mark the first appearance of the production model.

Whilst understandably toned down in comparison to the concept, the production NX retains much of the LF-NX’s overall edginess that sets it apart from its rivals as far as appearances are concerned.

The signature Lexus spindle grille adorns the front fascia, and moving around the rear, we see plenty of sharp edges and creases grafted onto its highly sophisticated sheet metal. LEDs provide front and rear illumination, their usage employed in the headlamps, daytime running lights, and tail lamps.

A selection of three powertrains has been confirmed for the NX’s global debut. Choices consist of a hybrid-powered NX 300h and a pair of 2.0-litre petrol engines, naturally aspirated (NX 200) and turbocharged (NX 200t). Auto start/stop technology will be extended to the petrol engines as well, providing the prospect of added fuel savings.

The NX will also offer a wide array of on-board technology, including a Lexus-first Wireless Charging Tray to enable charging of portable devices, the first application of a new Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a touch-pad, Panoramic View Monitor and a comprehensive Multi-information Display (including a Lexus-first G sensor and boost meter), Heads-Up Display, All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
