Showroom Experience: Naza Carnival 2008

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Throughout my days as a car nut watching out for and attending various car events, I notice that these things have a natural tendency to come out together. It’s like there are magnets around certain dates which cause the manufacturers and dealers to pick them. A good example was the last weekend, where this writer attended no less than five events throughout the Klang Valley.

Among the five, is the Naza Carnival 2008 at the Naza Auto Mall along the Federal Highway. I usually don’t care much for showroom events organised by Naza Motors, because for all the glamorous machines they have on display, all you’ll ever do is just to look at the cars and do nothing more.

Carnival atmosphere here for two days.
Carnival atmosphere here for two days.

The thing about me is this, as crazy as I am about cars, the idea of just seeing a car without driving it doesn’t excite me terribly - no matter how ’up there’ it is. As such, I usually give events without test drives a skip.

So, you’d probably understand that I did not go to the Naza Carnival 2008 on Sunday at Naza Auto Mall with bags of enthusiasm, even though there was a test drive for the Peugeot 407 available, part of the 407 Test Drive Me campaign, and a row of Kia test cars parked in front of the showroom.

Available for test drive.
Available for test drive.

My companion and I tested none of those. Instead, we went around looking, admiring and photographing the what everyone knows to be the largest collection of the finest and most exotic automobiles in the country. My personal guess is that the nett worth of their cars is probably worth, no, not a house, but a whole premier housing estate.

Each more expensive than an average house.
Each more expensive than an average house.

As we were walking, a young (and reasonably attractive) lady approached me to give me a little sticker, assuring me that it’s absolutely free, and then convincing me to part with forty one and a half of my ringgits for an RM36 Shell petrol card, a Shell James Bond Aston Martin DBS collector’s toy car and a total of RM60 worth of lubricant vouchers. It was a reasonable deal, if only for the lubricant vouchers, though I must admit that a male salesperson won’t stand half a chance sealing the deal.

Not long after handing over my cash to the lady, there was the cracking sound of a Ferrari V8 engine nearby. They were having a ‘Product Presentation’ session for the Ferrari F430. There was also another one for the 599 GTB Fiorano scheduled earlier, but I missed that one.

And here’s my opinion on the ‘Product Presentation’: it was not up to scratch. The presenter was fumbling through his ‘cheat sheet’ stammering through words. It begs the question why an entity of Naza’s considerable resources did not spend more of it to train him better before going on stage.

However, that presentation, together with our up close encounters with the likes of the Nissan GT-R, the BMW M3, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the Ferrari Enzo, the Maserati MC-12, and many others, faded into obscure memory for me and my companion as we came across something a lot more astonishing - at the Peugeot section!

Surprisingly, but by far, the best part of the show was here.
Surprisingly, but by far, the best part of the show was here.

Believe it or not, on our way home, our thoughts were dominated by the humble Naza 206 Bestari. In all my years following the car industry, never before in my life, have I ever come across a deal that reads like this: RM0 downpayment, 0% interest for 12 years. Yes, that’s right.. 12 YEARS! The amount of time needed to raise kids, and we have a loan package that lasts that long and charges no interest.

Staring in disbelief, we scratched our heads at the incredulity of the deal and pressed the poor salesgirl serving us to reveal all the fine print. There was none. You pay an RM100 booking fee, you wait one week, you drive the car away - just like that. Then each month, for the next 144 months, you pay RM390 (M/T) or RM425(A/T) back to Naza Credit, you get yourself a brand new Naza 206 Bestari.

We pressed to ask if the offer was just 0% interest for the first one or two years, but the salesgirl firmly said 0% for 12 years - a claim verified by her colleague. Now, I am used to hearing all sorts of baseless claims from salespeople, but the black and white on the pamphlets are clear: 0% interest for 12 years - no fine print whatsoever.

Here’s the most astonishing thing: after adding up the total instalments of RM390 and RM425 respectively over 12 months times 12 years, we arrived at a figure LOWER than the advertised price. There was no indication how long this offer is going to last, but I’d recommend anyone shopping for a car to check this deal out. I am not recommending whether you buy it or you don’t, but this is too amazing not to even look at it.

Thinking of getting one?

Now, do you still recall the Ferraris, the M3 or the GT-R earlier in this post? Don’t worry, neither did I.

Nissan Technology Square, 1-Utama

Monday, November 10th, 2008

For four days, Nissan will be showcasing advancements of their R&D in the Nissan Technology Square exhibition at 1-Utama, PJ. It contains exhibits focusing on themes of Environment, Safety and User Friendliness. The event started on 6 Nov 2008 and continues until 9 Nov. There is also the lineup of Nissan cars on sale in the Malaysian market on display including the new Mother Trucker, Navara. For the engineering buffs, you might also have a chance to listen to members of the Nissan R&D delivering open talks to the public.

I attended the event on the public times (shortly after the WRX STI launch just one floor above), and was fortunate enough to catch a talk delivered by Mr Itaru Nishikawa, President of Nissan Technical Centre South East Asia Co. Ltd. which is based in Bangkok. Mr Nishikawa’s talk focused on introducing the objectives of the NTS exhibition and also gave the audience an overview of Nissan’s worldwide and regional operations.

Interesting exhibits include a demonstration of the function of crumple zones in a car named Zonebody, where a simple mechanism demonstrates how crumple zones absorb energy in an impact and directing it around the occupant. Exhibited under the theme of Safety, it also shows how a stiff and rigid car body, while remaining relatively undamaged, allows the impact energy to be transmitted straight at the occupant.

Another similar looking exhibit, also in the simplest terms, served to demonstrate how aerodynamics serve to improve the efficiency of a car and thus lead to lower consumption. Exhibited under the theme Environment, this display shows two car-shaped objects sliding down an inclined tube of fluids with one ‘car’ having a more streamlined shape than the other. Of course the streamlined car slided down faster, thus proving their point - good aerodynamics give improved performance and reduces consumption - so, hurray for the environment.

Also exhibited was a full-sized cutaway model of an MR20DE engine and also a cutaway of a continously variable transmission (CVT) which was mated to a VQ35DE engine. Both these exhibits serve to highlight Nissan’s advancements in developing fuel efficient environmentally friendly powertrains for their cars.

Other interesting displays include a demonstration of a new anti-scratch paint (which miraculously loses all scratches upon heating!), Nissan’s own version of active headlamps, and a live demonstration of a seat belt pre-tensioner that tightens the belt upon stepping the brakes

After going through the displays, I went to have a closer look at both of Nissan’s most talked about models today: the Navara and the Sylphy. Photos with comments below.

Michael Krumm Ready to Claim Third Malaysian Victory at Super GT

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Two-time Sepang Super GT winner Michael Krumm today provided a sneak preview of the hot battle awaiting at the upcoming 2008 Super GT International Series Malaysia at Sunway Pyramid and immediately declared that he was ready to claim his third victory on Malaysian soil.

Driving the Xanavi NISMO Skyline race machine, Krumm, who is a two-time overall champion, thrilled the crowd at the open car park area as he drummed the machine to its thunderous roar and making squeeking ‘dough-nut’ spins around the open car park area.

Speaking at a press conference before the Street Demo, the German driver said the 2008 Nissan GT-R machine would be ‘much more powerful’ than the one used at the street demo; adding the race in Sepang would be an exciting thrilling affair for the fans.

“What you are about to see here will just be a small portion of the real action that would be happening in Sepang next weekend; it’s just to give you a feeling of the atmosphere of the race,” said Krumm, who would be partnering Japan’s Masataka Yanagida for the race.

Sepang hosts Round 4 of a nine-round 2008 Super GT International Series, which Krumm said had not started to well for the team; leaving them in sixth position with 18 points. The series is currently led by their Nismo Xanavi team-mates Satoshi Motoyama and Benoit Treluyer with 48 points.

After coming in second in the opening race in Suzuka, Krumm and Yanagida crashed in Round 2 at Okayama International Circuit and failed to score a single point in Round 3 at Fuji Speedway last month.

“I am looking forward to the Sepang race next weekend and for a change of luck for the remaining of the season. We would be going all out for the win and there is a 70 percent chance that we could do it,” said Krumm, who won in Sepang at the inaugural race in 2000 and in 2004 – all in a Nissan NISMO machine.

“In general, Sepang track favour the Honda NSX machines, so they would be strong. Having said that, it is very difficult to predict as the Super GT races over the last few years have been very close,” said Krumm, who hoped it does not rain next Sunday.

“I hope it will be very, very hot and very, very dry … I love it hot and dry,” said Krumm, who said that he had always liked the Sepang track because of its combination of fast and slows corners and its width that provide opportunities to try different racing lines.

Born on March 19, 1970, Krumm made an immediate impact in his racing debut in the German Formula Ford 1600 and won the German Formula Ford Series champion in the following year.

In 1990, he won the German Formula Opel Lotus Series champion and in 1993, Krumm won the All Japan F3 Championship before winning his first Japan GT crown in 1997.

“I have enjoyed my racing in Japan very much and I hope to continue to do this in a couple more years. It has been fun and exciting,” added Krumm.

Sylphy coming to Malaysia, but did Ghosn bring new Renault models (or Dacia) with him?

Monday, March 24th, 2008

with-sylphy.JPG

After a rather extended waiting period, the Nissan Sylphy will finally be making its way to Malaysia in the second quarter of this year (which means anytime now) and in the process, rejuvenate the rather tired family sedan line-up at Edaran Tan Chong Motors (ETCM).

sentra.jpg sunny.JPG

The wait is not surprising as ETCM is famous for its conservative approach and their tendency to keep models going as long as possible, sometimes well beyond their sell-by date. You cannot blame them because the strategy worked for them for the longest time as Malaysians are also a conservative lot and felt comfortable with the familiar.

The wait for the Sylphy was further extended by the fact that ETCM was building a new modern plant in Serendah and they needed to sort out any teething problems before moving in the Livina, which is their volume model for now and the near future.

bluebirdsylphy_30.jpgbluebirdsylphy_28.jpg

The Sylphy had to wait for the Serendah team to get their stride to prevent technical glitches and quality problems in teh highly competitive Japanese family sedan market that is now dominated by the Toyota Corolla Altis and the Honda Civic.

The Sylphy was introduced to the motoring Press during Carlos Ghosn’s visit to the Serendah plant and the Frenchman was clearly impressed by the new facility.

This is pure speculation but I suspect that his visit was part of ETCM’s effort of getting more models from the Renault-Nissan alliance, specifically from the French side of the marriage.

Ghosn’s reference to Afta and how it now makes it viable for the market to support the fully localised production of multiple brands in his speech it telling of what the boss is thinking and it would not be surprising if Serendah is chosen for that purpose.

This should please ETCM bosses and signal of bigger things to come.

I say that their next move will come from France because Renault as a brand is languishing in Malaysia and Asean. Here only the well seasoned Kangoo is available as the affordable model and the Megane satisfying fans who want something current.

ETCM being a trading company will always want either high volume or good margins and since the Renault brand is not strong enough to command a fat margin, I am quite sure that they are looking for another volume model….

The Dacia Logan is the most logical volume choice for them but TC Eurocars have always insisted that it is too basic and agricultural for the ever more sophisticated Malaysian drivers but things may have changed after they see the new Proton Saga, which is a pretty basic car and the Logan would probably match it spec for spec.

On top of that the Logan has spawned a station wagon, van and pick-up variants which would eb very useful in Malaysia and the Asean market which is lacking low cost commercial vehicles for small enterprises.

It could also be the new Dacia Sandero hatchback which is a more contemporary and youthful model but hatchbacks are notoriously difficult to sell in Malaysia unless they are priced to go, like Perodua.

As the car market continues to look uncertain for the year, it is interesting to see how ETCM responds to the situation, the order book for the Livina has swelled to the point of requiring a second shift in Serendah

livina-badge.jpg

But no one can live on just one model so they will have to get a second volume model running to keep the plant buzzing once the demand for the MPV stabilises. I twould be difficult to start cutting back to one shift and laying off people in a few years time.

logan-world-car-project.jpg

A Renault designer working on the Logan interior

The Livina is proof that Malaysians still want a lot of bang for their buck and there is nothing in the Nissan line-up that can offer that right now while Renault has been going on the world-car offensive for some years and may have more to offer to Tan Chong….

The next few months is critical for the country in terms of political stability and this in turn means that the business community is also taking extra caution with their investments. The more than expected slowdown of the US economy will have its effects on Malaysia a few months down the road so everyone is bracing themselves for a tough time, this year we hit the full ten-year cycle of economic up and down adn there are no prizes for guessing whether it is time for the graph to point north or south

If you are keen, below is the full text of Ghosn’s speech and the Press release from ETCM.

Selamat tengahari… good afternoon everyone. Thank you for joining us.

As it has been seven years since my last visit to Malaysia… I am glad to have this chance to see the progress of the Nissan brand in this important market.

First, I would like to offer our partner, Tan Chong, our thanks for 50 years of success in representing Nissan… and our congratulations on their achievements over the past year.

In January, Nissan recorded its highest monthly sales in Malaysia since 1985: 3,093 units.

And with over 10,000 bookings for our new Grand Livina, we can look forward to more growth to come.

Second, I would like to thank the workforce here at this new, state-of-the-art Serendah plant … for your hard work in gearing up to production in less than a year from the end of construction.

And I would like to encourage you in your efforts as you add a second shift – that will double production to 2,400 units a month by September.

What’s more, I would like to thank everyone involved with the Nissan brand in Malaysia – from the factory and offices through sales and after-sales – for consistently maintaining Nissan in the front rank of satisfying Malaysian customers.

Recognizing the achievements of the Nissan team here in Malaysia is the first of two items on my agenda today. The second is to reaffirm Nissan’s commitment to Malaysia.

There are four pillars supporting Nissan’s commitment to Malaysia.

The first is Nissan’s empathy for Malaysia as a nation.

Nissan came to Malaysia in 1957 – the year of your independence – forming an alliance with Tan Chong that continues to this day.

At the time, not everyone believed Malaysia – with its diversity – would succeed as a country.

But Nissan believed… and ever since we have watched your achievements with growing respect.

The modern prosperity and sophistication of your cities is the most visible evidence.

But for me… Malaysia’s greatest achievement… is the creation of strength from diversity.

Malaysia has succeeded by respecting all identities and striving to include everyone.

As a global enterprise, we recognize this as crucial to our own progress – and a competitive advantage.

No matter what your gender, your color or your culture… at Nissan you are judged on the contribution you make to the company. Over the long term this gives us an advantage in attracting the most talented and motivated people in every market.

The same respect for identity supports the second pillar of Nissan’s commitment to Malaysia: our half-century partnership with Tan Chong.

A whole generation of Malaysians grew up with the “Datsun” brand. The next generation is now growing up knowing the Nissan brand. Despite this generational change, what has remained consistent is the superior service and focus on the customer that is the hallmark of Tan Chong.

Thanks to the efforts of Dato Tan and Dato Ang… Nissan-brand operations in Malaysia are efficient, growing… and closely integrated with our activities across ASEAN.

And that is what we need. If we can achieve efficiency, profitable growth and close collaboration with a partnership… we will continue to do so.

In fact, such alliances are at the core of our business model. The Renault-Nissan Alliance is based on mutual respect for the identity and interests of each partner. And the same is true with the Nissan-Tan Chong partnership.

The third pillar… is our firm belief in the benefits of regional integration through initiatives such as the ASEAN Free Trade Area.

By integrating 10 markets, AFTA creates a significant player in the regional and global economy.

Last year, across this region, we saw sales growth of 25% for Nissan. This year, with slower growth forecast for the mature markets… ASEAN stands out as an attractive and vibrant market place.

ASEAN is large enough to sustainably support fully localized production by multiple brands… competing to provide consumers with the best possible choice and value.

So we firmly support regional integration as a win-win proposition for Malaysia, for consumers and for business.

That’s what really matters: benefit to consumers.

And that’s why the fourth and most important pillar is our commitment to Malaysian consumers.

We will earn our place in Malaysia by bringing products closely attuned to their needs and desires…

…in terms of distinctive design, driving performance, friendly innovation, high quality and value.

And we will back our products with superior service through all phases of the ownership experience.

Already, we offer wide range of products in Malaysia:

..Sentra has been a perennial favorite.

..Latio and Latio Sport have been very well received.

..X-Trail is a multiple award winner

..The double-cab Frontier has been a best-seller in its segment

..And businesses across Malaysia rely on our two LCVs: the Vanette and Urvan

..Rounding out the line-up… March, Murano, 350Z and Cefiro offer customers a diverse and distinctive selection from the world of Nissan

For the future, we will continue to bring the best of Nissan to Malaysia. You have already shown your appreciation of the new Grand Livina and there is more to come.

Today, we are going to show you the new Sylphy sedan… which will be introduced later this year as an additional model in the Nissan line-up.

As we enter our second half-century in Malaysia… you can continue to expect the best from Nissan.

Terima kasih… thank you very much.

New Products to boost Nissan’s growth in Malaysia

- New Sylphy sedan to be introduced second quarter of 2008 -

KUALA LUMPUR (21st March 2008) –Carlos Ghosn, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nissan Motor Company Ltd., affirmed that strong products will be key for Nissan to achieve sustainable and profitable growth in Malaysia.

Speaking at a special preview of the Nissan Sylphy, Ghosn outlined that clear business goals, a well-timed and concrete product introduction strategy, and a well-established service operations network are key drivers behind the dynamic partnership between Nissan and local partner Tan Chong Motor.

“Tan Chong Motor has represented Nissan in Malaysia for the last fifty years and have consistently demonstrated superior service and a focus on the customer. In January, Nissan recorded its highest monthly sales in Malaysia since 1985 with 3,093 units. And with over 10,000 bookings for the Grand Livina, we can look forward to more growth to come,” said Ghosn.

Sales success, attributed mainly to new products that were introduced into Malaysia last year, will be the foundation on which further growth will be built. Nissan has been progressively expanding its product range in Malaysia with the introduction of new products including the Latio and Latio Sport, the Grand Livina, and the new Sylphy, which will arrive in the second quarter of this year.

“We will earn our place in Malaysia by bringing products closely attuned to the needs and desires of our consumers. These products, offering customers a diverse and distinctive selection from the world of Nissan, will be backed by superior service through all phases of the ownership experience.,” Ghosn continued.

Ghosn is visiting Malaysia on the invitation of Khazanah Nasional Berhad to speak at the Khazanah Global Lecture series.
